What can a portrait photograph reveal about a political system? What can a picture taken more than forty years ago tell us about our contemporary society? Based on photographs taken during the arrest of political prisoners over the course of the Portuguese dictatorship (1926-1974), 48 aims to convey the mechanisms by which a dictatorial regime seeks to self-perpetuate.

RESISTING THE ARCHIVE

The seminar takes as its point of departure the filmmaker’s work based on archival materials (Still Life, 48, Obscure Light and White Shadow – work in progress) in order to open up a discussion on the different forms of working with archival images when there is apparently nothing to be seen. Susana de Sousa Dias is a filmmaker and university teacher. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts/Video, an MPhil in Aesthetics and Art Philosophy, a 5-year BA in Fine Arts-Painting, and a BA in Cinema from the National School of Theatre and Cinema. Among her cinematic works are Natureza Morta-Visages d’une dictature (2005), and 48 (2009). Obscure Light (2017) is her most recent film. She has exhibited her works at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Lisbon, the Contemporary Art Center Matadero, Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Ceará, Brazil, the Pacific Film Archive, and the Harvard Film Archive, among many other venues. Her films have been selected for film festivals worldwide (Viennale, Visions du Réel, Sarajevo IFF, Torino FF, RIDMontreal, DokLeipzig, Dockanema Maputo, Mar del Plata Independent FF, etc.). In 2010, she was awarded with the Grand Prix du Cinéma du Réel . Currently she is working on the film Total Station in Angola. She lectures at the Fine Arts Faculty of the University of Lisbon.
