THE WAY OUT IS THE WAY TWO
Public Screening and Discussion with filmmaker CAULEEN SMITH Monday November 2,2015  7 PM, Communications 150 / Studio C

Introduction by F+DM Professor B. Ruby Rich

co-sponsored by Porter College, Film + Digital Media, and the Arts Dean’s Fund for Excellence

CDAR and the Film + Digital Media / Porter College Visiting Artist series present a screening of THE WAY OUT IS THE WAY TWO with Cauleen Smith in person. This series of short films comprise a suite that ruminates on Sun Ra’s time in Chicago, from 1945-1961 and the various creative practices that he developed during that time. Rather than didactic documents which directly refer to Sun Ra, these videos conflate what can be known about the mythic being Sun Ra with what can be understood about present-tense Chicago. The shorts are designed to function as free standing components of a greater whole – a constellation.

cauleenCauleen Smith
is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects upon the everyday possibilities of the imagination. Though operating in multiple materials and arenas, Smith roots her work firmly within the discourse of mid-twentieth century experimental film. Drawing from structuralism, third world cinema, and science fiction, Smith makes things that deploy the tactics of these disciplines while offering a phenomenological experience for spectators and participants. Smith’s films, objects, and installations have been featured in group exhibitions at the Studio Museum of Harlem, Houston Contemporary Art Museum; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, Yerba Buena Center for Art, and the New Museum, New York, D21 Leipzig and Decad, Berlin. She currently lives in Chicago while teaching at the Vermont College of Fine Art low-residency MFA program.
